So I'm wondering if anyone here has a home security system in your house and if so how are you able to control it? I've seen some from adt with touch screnes so I don't think that will work. Just curious.

You should inquire with A D T. They have key pads with numbers on them like your telephone. You must pay a monthly fee for the security watch, but if it is something you want it is a good company. You can even get a necklace deal to wear, and your system can be controled from that, or a handheld device you can carry with you along with the wall mounted keypads. Depending on your budget and what you desire to be armed the system can be setup ideal. I don't know the cost in your area, so can not say. Hunning Well is another good company. Just explain to the security advisor your needs with any company you choose.

We have one from Guardian and we like it. The keypad is tactile and we also have keychain fobs we can use to arm and disarm the unit. Of course it has zillions of features that are inaccessbile because of the menues but for our needs, it works fine.

I actually heard a podcast on an ADT system a couple years back that someone did for Blind Cool Tech. The system was fairly accessibile as I recall because it had speach output for most if not all the menus and whatnot. I assume that part was optional but he had it enabled. If I'm not mistaken those protect against fire and carbon monoxide as wel as burglary. The main reason I don't invest in one, well aside from finances and the fact that I live in Fixed Income Housing and somehow I don't think that falls under my list of things I'm allowed to do with my apartment, is that knowing me I'd probably end up setting it off because I forgot the code to disarm the system. I think you have what, sixty seconds from the time you enter the premises before the alarm is actually triggered? Besides I think my cat would set it off as well.

Cool thanks for the info. We'll be getting a system installed next week. I think it's about 30 seconds to disarm the system before it goes off but hopefully it's 60 I'd probably forget the code too.

We have an ADT system. I believe you get 45 seconds to turn it off. Additionally, even if you do set it off, ADT doesn't take any action until the alarm sounds for over a minute. So, basically, you've got 1:45 to turn it off. Ours doesn't talk or anything, but the buttons beep when pressed and the pad is very tactile. It's not a big deal to learn how to use one. Having been burglarized twice when I was growing up, the peace of mind is worth the $30 per month if you can afford it. Good luck with the new system.
